Every season around this time, I often get asked when certain ski areas will close. Of course, the truth is only Mother Nature and demand will dictate the closing date, but looking at last year's dates will give you a decent **IDEA** of when resorts typically close down. Here are last year's closing dates and the last twenty ski areas open for the season. I would consider last season to be pretty typical. However, some areas, such as Lutsen, had a record-breaking end-of-season.
Projected Closing Dates:
Some ski areas have begun providing "Projected/Tenitive" closing dates. For some ski areas, these are firm cut-off days; for others, they are just guidelines. If no date has been given, we labeled them TBD; this is where this historical data can be helpful.
Closing Considerations:
Often I get asked, "why does XXX close with so much snow left on the ground." This topic is one that I could talk about for hours, but here are some primary reasons to consider.
-Off-season improvement projects
-Lack of customers (especially day tickers)
-Operational costs to move snow
-Struggle to find employees to work
-Giving staff a break after a five-month sprint
-Insurance
